In close proximity to the town hall, built in 1730 dominates the St. Johannis church Norderstadt's cityscape. The church was built around 1150. The tower is decorated with a baroque cupola since 1697. It is the oldest sacral brick building in the North German area. Romanesque style elements at the tower and choir's barrel-vault can be detected. In the 14th-century gothic aisles were added and the church's interior revamped in gothic style. Medieval apostle frescos painted on the arched roof are only preserved in parts. Different on the choir wall: crucifixion group from 1350; St. Christopher from 1400. The saint pictures at the southern pillars start with John the Baptist to whom the church is dedicated. The Protestant prince-bishop Philipp Sigismund (1586 - 1623) had the church artistically decorated. The baroque pulpit - it carries his coat-of-arms and depictions of the four Evangelists - was finished in 1598. An early work of stucco in Germany is the relief above the crucifixion group by the stucco plasterer Gerhard Schmidt who recreated the 'Last Judgement' in the years around in 1596. At the same time the paintings in the choir's vault were created.
