St. Josef church in Verden
Come on, build a house... says a modern hymn. To built a house was the wish of the believers, when 33 years after the reformation a small Catholic community got together in the mid of the 19th-century. But only in 1894 was the church at the Wall finally completed and inaugurated. Verden has a Catholic church once again! A few weeks before the Second World War ended the church was heavily damaged. Makeshift rebuilding took place quickly and then in the following years different alterations were done, whereby the sanctuary was redesigned in terms of the 2. Vatican council. The church newly painted in 1987. The architecture shows a three-nave facility, emulating the style of a Romanesque basilica with square choir and half-round apse. Today west facade with 35mhigh tower. Bronze portal figures. The paintings in the apse and choir were done in Nazarene style - pictures which speak of the holy family. In the choir: founders' portraits. Nave: empty spaces in tendril painting, arcatures with floral ornaments. In-between on red spaces the passion tools, coffered ceiling. Easter candelabra: bronze. Pretty depiction of the drowning for rescue struggling Jonas. Organ: 22 stops, 2 manuals; installation: December 2004.
Let lots of guest into the house... says another verse in the above mentioned hymn. The church interior with its quiet, subdued atmosphere invites guests for a viewing or quiet reflection.
